We’ve received quite a few phone calls and emails regarding CodaKid’s Summer Tech Camps in Scottsdale, and we’ve assembled a list of frequently asked questions and answers. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you had further questions. We hope to see you this summer!
Are your three camps similar? Are any camps more introductory than others?
All of our three camps (Modding for Minecraft, 3D Game Design with Minecraft, and 3D Modeling and Animation are different camps with unique curricula and lesson plans. No camp is more introductory than the other; they are just different. The easiest way for us to explain the differences might be:
1. Modding for Minecraft is a Java computer programming camp
2. 3D Game Design with Minecraft is a Game Design and Level Layout Camp
3. 3D Modeling and Animation is a digital arts camp
In each camp, we are attempting to simulate activities that correspond to the artistic production, game design, and programming divisions within most video game companies, and our division of camps into these functional areas is a great way to do this.
What is the student to teacher ratio?
Camps will feature individualized instruction and student teacher ratios of eight students or less
What are the qualifications of your teachers?
Our faculty is as diverse as it is experienced. Our programming instructors are experienced Java programmers with a superb understanding of Minecraft and phenomenal teaching skills. Our game design and art team consists of professional video game designers, top notch artists, and seasoned animators.
What curricula do you use?
CodaKid has invested tens of thousands of dollars into creating our own proprietary curricula for all of our classes.
Are the kids on the computer all day or are there off-computer activities?
Off-computer activities will include drawing, designing, creating professional caliber design docs, and spec sheets. We will also have a number of structured free time activities that will include board games, chess, treasure hunts, presentations, and contests.
We are proud to offer our campers live and video conferenced Q&A with accomplished programmers, game designers, and artists from all over the world. Some of the companies that will be represented are Sony Sports, Wetta Studios (maker of The Hobbit, Avatar, and LOR series), LeapFrog, and more.
Will there be any exercise or outdoor play?
CodaKid will provide structured outside exercise in the mornings, including fun relay races, target practice with water balloon launchers, obstacle courses and more.
Will there be gaming during camp?
Yes, there will be limited amounts of structured gaming, usually to try out new student-created mods, 3D levels, and models. We also plan to introduce the students to some cutting edge accessories like Oculus, a virtual reality peripheral that was recently purchased by Facebook. In our Game Design Camp, we will also introduce some different game types as we explore game design theory and best practices.
Are lunches included? How much do lunches cost and where will the food come from?
Purchased lunches from CodaKid cost $10 per day and require advanced ordering the week before the start of camp. Some of the restaurants that we will order from include DeFalco’s Italian Deli, Jimmy Johns, Chipotle, and more. Students may bring bag lunches for free. CodaKid will provide free snacks and beverages in the mornings and afternoons.
Are you offering camps in any locations other than Old Town Scottsdale?
This summer we will only be running camps at our Old Town Scottsdale Tech Studio.
How much do your camps cost?
Our camps cost $499 per week for a full day camp from 9am to 4pm.
Do you offer half-day camps?
We do not offer half-day options at this time. Our full days camps are so action-packed that the time flies by!
